I just cut this out of my philosophy of counseling paper, not really the right paper for the rant. I thought tumblr might be better. Enjoy my rage.
White, straight, cisgendered, men have almost no chance of being able to be quiet and listen without giving their opinion, even when talking about experiences of oppression that they will never experience themselves.
Yes, we all have bad days, but they seem to think that because one time they got picked on in highschool they are an expert on all things sexist, racist, homophobic, ableist, or transphobic.
Also those things do not actually exist because they haven’t noticed it, and they are really, really smart. They treat everyone the same, it doesn’t matter what color they are, or if they are a woman, or anything else horrible like that.
These much voiced opinions are often expressed in the form of being the “devil’s advocate”, which can also be translated to “this is my actual opinion on this subject I know nothing about, but I’m going to present it in a way that makes me feel like I’m just being rational and academic”.
